Description
Black bulgariella (scientific name: Bulgariella pulla) is an ascomycete fungus that causes necrosis of the bark and phloem in various deciduous tree species. As a facultative parasite, it predominantly infects weakened trees, exploiting wounds, frost cracks, or areas of dead tissue to establish itself and proliferate within the host's bark layers.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include various oak species (Quercus) and other hardwoods. Once the fungus enters the cambial zone, it disrupts the tree's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients. Over time, this systemic interference leads to localized cell death, causing the bark to collapse and eventually detach from the wood.
Key symptoms include the formation of small, black, disk-shaped fruiting bodies (apothecia) that erupt through the bark surface. These structures appear as dark, crust-like spots on the trunk or branches. Affected bark areas often become sunken, discolored, and necrotic. If the infection girdles a branch, the foliage distal to the point of infection will wilt and turn brown, eventually leading to branch death.
The development of Bulgariella pulla is highly dependent on environmental humidity and the physiological health of the tree. The fungus spreads via spores that are dispersed by wind and splashing rain. High moisture levels promote spore germination, and the presence of bark injuries significantly increases the success rate of infection, making stressed trees particularly susceptible to colonization.

- Apply protective wound dressings or fungicides to any mechanical damage on trunks.
- Maintain tree vigor through proper irrigation and nutrient management.
- Monitor and control wood-boring insects that create entry points for the fungus.

The economic and ecological impact of this disease is manifested in the decline of wood quality and the gradual loss of mature trees. Without proactive management, the infection can spread throughout a stand, particularly in areas where trees are already struggling due to drought or soil compaction. Effective monitoring and sanitation remain the most viable strategies for managing the risk posed by this fungus.
