Description

Byssoloma is a genus of lichenized fungi that grow as epiphytes on the surface of plant leaves. In agricultural practice, they are often observed in humid environments where they colonize the cuticle of evergreen plants. While they are not typical necrotrophic pathogens, their presence can negatively impact the plant's physiological capacity by obscuring the leaf surface.

The fungus functions as a lichen, establishing a symbiotic relationship with algae. The physical presence of the thallus on the leaf creates a barrier that hinders gas exchange through the stomata. Although the fungus does not directly extract nutrients from the plant's vascular system, the resulting stress on the plant tissue can lead to decreased photosynthetic efficiency.

Common hosts include various tropical and subtropical ornamental species, as well as plants grown in high-humidity greenhouses. The symptoms manifest as distinct, often pale, circular or irregular patches on the leaf surface. These patches may feel slightly raised or velvety to the touch, and they persist throughout the life of the leaf unless removed or treated.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of Byssoloma spread. Excessive humidity, stagnant air, and lack of direct sunlight create the perfect microclimate for colonization. Plants located in shaded or overcrowded nursery environments are particularly susceptible to the accumulation of these organisms on their foliage.

Management strategies focus on environmental modification rather than total eradication. Improving air circulation, increasing light exposure, and reducing ambient humidity are the most effective preventive measures. In cases where the infestation covers a significant portion of the leaf area, application of appropriate fungicides or mechanical cleaning of the foliage may be recommended to restore normal leaf function.
