Description
Byssonectria is a genus of ascomycetous fungi that primarily inhabits organic matter and soil surfaces. While many species are saprotrophic, they can become problematic in agricultural environments characterized by high humidity and poor aeration, where they may opportunistically infect sensitive plant tissues and seedlings.
The disease is caused by the proliferation of Byssonectria spores, which thrive in damp, decomposing organic environments. These fungi act as indicators of overwatered soil or poor greenhouse sanitation, as they require moisture to successfully establish their mycelial structures on the host plant.
Crops most susceptible to this condition include greenhouse seedlings, ornamental plants, and various bedding plants kept in high-humidity microclimates. The fungus usually targets the root zone or the stem base, interfering with the vascular system and depriving the plant of essential nutrients and water.
The primary symptom is the emergence of distinctive, bright yellow or orange cup-shaped apothecia on the soil surface or the base of stems. This is often accompanied by white fungal mats that lead to collar rot, stem softening, leaf chlorosis, and the eventual death of the affected plant if left untreated.
Management and prevention focus on environmental control: maintaining proper soil drainage, ensuring adequate air circulation, and avoiding excessive watering are essential. Removing infected plant debris and disinfecting greenhouse benches and equipment are crucial steps in preventing the spread and recurrence of this fungal pathogen in commercial and home settings.
