Cadophora infection is a fungal disease caused by species of the genus Cadophora, which are known as significant wood-decay pathogens. These fungi primarily attack the xylem of perennial plants, causing systemic health decline and structural damage to the vascular tissue of the host.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include grapevines (Vitis vinifera) and several species of pome fruit trees. The fungus enters the plant through pruning wounds, graft unions, or natural cracks in the bark, establishing a parasitic relationship that gradually compromises the plant's ability to transport water and essential nutrients.
Symptomatology typically involves internal wood necrosis, characterized by dark discoloration and staining visible when the affected branches or stems are cross-sectioned. Above-ground symptoms include stunted shoot growth, foliar chlorosis, branch dieback, and in severe cases, the sudden collapse of entire vines or trees during the peak of the growing season.
Environmental factors such as high humidity, cool temperatures, and rainfall facilitate the dispersal of fungal spores. Furthermore, the disease is frequently disseminated by contaminated agricultural equipment, making human intervention a major vector in the spread of the pathogen within orchards and vineyards.
Management focuses heavily on preventative cultural practices. Essential steps include:
- Performing pruning during dry weather to minimize spore entry.
- Applying effective wound sealants to prevent fungal colonization.
- Sterilizing all cutting tools with alcohol or bleach solutions between plants.
- Removing and destroying symptomatic wood to reduce the local inoculum density.
Biological and chemical control options remain limited, reinforcing the importance of rigorous nursery hygiene and early detection. Growers must prioritize maintaining plant vigor through appropriate irrigation and nutrition to help the plants withstand potential infections throughout their long-term life cycle.
