Cainiella johansonii is a specialized ascomycete fungus known for causing infections on plants of the genus Dryas. This pathogen primarily impacts species such as the mountain avens (Dryas octopetala), which are native to arctic, subarctic, and alpine environments. It is recognized as an obligate parasite that thrives in the harsh conditions where its host plants reside.
The fungus specifically attacks the foliage of the host plants. Because the host species are low-growing, mat-forming shrubs, the infection can rapidly spread across entire colonies. The pathogen's life cycle is tightly synchronized with the brief growing season of these arctic plants, allowing it to complete its reproductive stage before the onset of winter.
Symptoms of Cainiella johansonii infection manifest as small, dark brown to black lesions on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, and small black fruiting bodies (ascomata) emerge on the leaf surface. Affected leaves often exhibit chlorosis, curling, and eventual necrosis, which significantly reduces the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis.
