Calathella is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Agaricomycetes. Within the agronomic field, this pathogen is associated with specific types of rot and damage to woody and herbaceous plant tissues. This basidiomycete fungus primarily maintains a saprotrophic lifestyle, though under certain environmental conditions, it acts as a weak parasite, colonizing weakened host tissues.

The primary crops susceptible to infection by this fungus include various types of ornamental shrubs and forest tree species. The fungus prefers to localize on twigs, bark, and decaying plant debris, gradually transitioning to living tissues when environmental conditions facilitate successful colonization.

Initial symptoms include the emergence of small, cup-shaped or discoid fruiting bodies on the surface of the bark. As the mycelium develops, tissue necrosis occurs, characterized by a darkening of the bark and the formation of fissures. The pathogen spreads most effectively during prolonged rainy periods or in shaded, poorly ventilated areas with high humidity. Spore dispersal is primarily mediated by wind currents and rain splashes.
