Calathella

Calathella is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Agaricomycetes. Within the agronomic field, this pathogen is associated with specific types of rot and damage to woody and herbaceous plant tissues. This basidiomycete fungus primarily maintains a saprotrophic lifestyle, though under certain environmental conditions, it acts as a weak parasite, colonizing weakened host tissues.

The primary crops susceptible to infection by this fungus include various types of ornamental shrubs and forest tree species. The fungus prefers to localize on twigs, bark, and decaying plant debris, gradually transitioning to living tissues when environmental conditions facilitate successful colonization.

Initial symptoms include the emergence of small, cup-shaped or discoid fruiting bodies on the surface of the bark. As the mycelium develops, tissue necrosis occurs, characterized by a darkening of the bark and the formation of fissures. In areas colonized by the fungus, the wood loses its structural integrity and becomes brittle, leading to the premature death of the affected branches.

The development of Calathella is directly linked to atmospheric humidity levels and the presence of surface moisture on the plants. The pathogen spreads most effectively during prolonged rainy periods or in shaded, poorly ventilated areas with high humidity. Spore dispersal is primarily mediated by wind currents and rain splashes.

Protection and management measures involve a comprehensive approach aimed at reducing the overall inoculum pressure. Key agronomic practices include:

• Sanitary pruning of affected branches and their immediate removal or destruction away from the site.
• Ensuring optimal plant density to improve canopy aeration and reduce humidity.
• Application of copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments for weakened plantings during the early spring period.
• Timely fertilization and care to enhance the natural vigor and immune response of the plants.
