Caliciopsis is a genus of ascomycetous fungi known for causing bark and stem diseases in various coniferous trees. The most significant pathogen within this group is Caliciopsis pinea, which is responsible for necrotic lesions and cankers on the stems of pines, significantly impacting tree health and timber quality in managed forests.

The fungus functions as a pathogen by colonizing the phloem and cambium layers of the host plant. Infection typically initiates through bark wounds or lenticels, where the fungal mycelium begins to develop. As the infection progresses, it disrupts the flow of nutrients and water, eventually killing the tissue and forming the characteristic cankers associated with the disease.

Susceptible host species primarily include various pine varieties, particularly those growing in dense stands. The disease prevalence is often exacerbated by environmental stress, such as prolonged drought or poor site conditions. Young and middle-aged trees are particularly vulnerable, though mature specimens can also succumb to heavy infestations under specific conditions.

Key indicators of Caliciopsis infestation include:

  • Extensive resinosis (resin flow) appearing on the bark surface.
  • Development of vertical cracks and sunken cankers on the trunk.
  • Appearance of minute, black, hair-like fruiting bodies protruding from the bark.

Effective management requires a proactive silvicultural approach. Since fungicides are rarely practical for large-scale forest applications, focus must be on thinning stands to improve airflow and reduce humidity levels. Additionally, removing heavily infected trees prevents the buildup of inoculum, which is crucial for maintaining the long-term health of the plantation.
