The fungus primarily targets pine species, with Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) being the most common and severely affected host. The most distinctive diagnostic symptom is the presence of numerous small, black, needle-like or hair-like fruiting bodies (ascomata) protruding from the bark surface.
