Calicium is a genus of lichenized fungi that are often mistaken for tree diseases. From an agronomic standpoint, it is critical to classify these organisms correctly: they are epiphytes, not pathogens. They grow exclusively on the surface of the bark and do not extract nutrients or moisture from the host plant's internal vascular system.
The biological nature of Calicium involves a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and algae. These organisms belong to the Caliciaceae family and are characterized by distinctive, stalked fruiting bodies. They thrive in environments where tree bark remains damp for extended periods, usually in older, slower-growing specimens.
Host plants commonly include various species of pine, spruce, oak, and older apple or pear trees. The presence of Calicium is a visual indicator of the tree's age and the condition of its bark. Because they do not feed on the tree, they do not cause direct necrosis or tissue decay, unlike true fungal pathogens such as cankers or rots.
Symptoms are identified by the appearance of minute, dark, pin-like structures scattered across the bark fissures. While they are essentially harmless to the tree's health, dense colonies can trap moisture and debris against the trunk, which may encourage the secondary growth of mosses or create hiding spots for minor insect pests.
Management strategies focus on maintaining tree vigor and bark hygiene. Ensuring proper light exposure and airflow within the canopy is the most effective preventative measure, as these lichens require high humidity to persist. In orchard settings, periodic brushing of the bark and proper fertilization help ensure that trees remain healthy and less susceptible to the accumulation of epiphytic organisms.
