Callistosporium is a genus of fungi belonging to the Tricholomataceae family. While primarily recognized as saprotrophs that decompose organic matter, certain conditions allow these fungi to act as pathogens or secondary invaders on stressed or weakened trees, contributing to significant wood degradation and potential economic loss in forest management.

The disease is caused by fungal mycelium colonizing the host's woody tissues. It is classified as a type of white or brown rot, depending on the specific enzymatic activity of the fungal species involved. This process systematically breaks down the structural components of the tree, such as lignin and cellulose, compromising its physical integrity.

Host plants typically include a variety of broad-leaved and coniferous trees. The development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity, poor soil drainage, and existing wounds on the tree trunk or roots, which provide entry points for the fungal spores.

Symptoms are often visible in the form of fruiting bodies appearing at the base of the trunk or on decaying wood. Internally, the wood becomes discolored, softened, and friable. As the decay progresses, the tree exhibits symptoms of systemic stress, including crown thinning, reduced foliage density, and increased susceptibility to windthrow due to structural failure.

Prevention and control strategies focus on integrated management. Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization, avoiding physical damage during maintenance, and ensuring good site drainage are essential. Sanitizing the area by removing and destroying heavily infected wood, as well as minimizing the accumulation of woody debris, helps to break the infection cycle and prevent further spread.
