Olive callistosporium (Callistosporium elaeodes) is a wood-inhabiting fungus that acts as a weak pathogen, primarily affecting weakened or stressed broad-leaved trees. While often observed as a saprotroph, under specific ecological conditions, it can contribute to the progressive decay of wood tissue, significantly reducing the structural integrity of the host plant over time.
The host range of Callistosporium elaeodes includes various deciduous tree species found in humid forest environments or landscape plantings. The fungus typically exploits wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks to infiltrate the vascular system. Trees that are already weakened by unfavorable environmental factors are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization.
Symptoms of the infection include localized discoloration of the wood, often exhibiting an olive or brownish tint in the affected areas. As the mycelium colonizes the wood, it breaks down lignin and cellulose, leading to a loss of mechanical strength. In later stages, small, typically mushroom-shaped fruit bodies appear on the surface of the trunk or stump, serving as the primary source for spore dissemination.
Favorable conditions for the spread of this pathogen include high humidity, moderate temperatures, and poor air circulation. Spores are primarily dispersed through wind and splashing rain, landing on susceptible surfaces. In dense or poorly maintained stands, the fungus can build up significant inoculum, increasing the risk of transmission to neighboring trees.
Effective management and protection rely on proactive cultural practices. Sanitizing pruning tools, applying protective sealants to fresh cuts, and performing regular site inspections are critical for early detection. Removing dead or severely infested wood helps to reduce the total spore load in the environment, thereby protecting the health and longevity of the remaining trees.
