Description

The disease-causing agent is the fungus Calloria tremelloides (often referred to as Calloria neglecta), an ascomycete species. While frequently observed as a saprotroph living on decaying matter, it possesses the capability to act as a weak pathogen, infecting living plant tissues when the host is stressed or weakened by environmental factors.

Common hosts for this fungus include various herbaceous plants, with a notable prevalence on nettle species (Urtica) and the decaying stems of perennial garden plants. It thrives in environments where plants have sustained mechanical damage, frost injuries, or are suffering from poor nutrient management, which provides entry points for the fungal mycelium.

Symptoms are distinct and visually recognizable: the emergence of small, jelly-like, bright yellow to orange cup-shaped apothecia on the surface of stems. As the infection progresses, the tissues surrounding these structures undergo necrosis, leading to tissue softening, discoloration, and eventual wilting or death of the affected plant organ.

Environmental conditions are the primary driver of disease development. High humidity levels, persistent rainfall, and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C facilitate the production of spores and the rapid expansion of the fungus. The pathogen spreads primarily through windborne or rain-splashed spores that adhere to susceptible plant surfaces during moist weather.

Economic damage is typically localized but can be severe in neglected plantings or high-humidity greenhouse environments. Effective management strategies include maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure airflow, timely removal and destruction of infected plant debris to minimize inoculum, and the application of protective fungicide treatments if the infection risk is deemed high due to prolonged wet weather.
