Calocera is a genus of fungi belonging to the Dacrymycetaceae family, widely known in arboriculture and forestry as wood-decaying saprotrophs. While they typically colonize dead wood, their presence often indicates underlying decay or senescence in living trees, which requires professional monitoring to prevent further spread of wood degradation.
The disease agent is the fungus itself, which produces distinctive, gelatinous, antler-like, or branched fruiting bodies often appearing in bright yellow or orange shades. These structures are designed to release spores into the environment, which serve as the primary source of infection for susceptible wood surfaces and open wounds.
Symptoms of infestation are primarily characterized by the emergence of these vibrant fungal spikes on tree trunks, stumps, or decaying branches. Internally, the wood undergoes a process of brown rot, where the structural cellulose is degraded, leading to the wood becoming crumbly, brittle, and significantly weakened in its mechanical capacity.
Development and spread are facilitated by high humidity levels and the availability of decaying organic matter. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind and rain, settling on damaged areas or cracks in the bark. Warm, damp environments are critical for spore germination, allowing the mycelium to penetrate deeper into the vascular tissues of the host plant.
Effective prevention and control strategies involve maintaining proper orchard or forest hygiene. This includes:
