While it is commonly associated with dead organic matter, in specific ecological conditions, it can colonize weakened or stressed living trees. This interaction often leads to significant degradation of the xylem, compromising the structural health of the host plant.
The fungus is a basidiomycete that thrives by degrading cellulose and lignin. The development of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly ambient humidity and temperature. Its reproductive stage is characterized by pale, spatula-shaped fruit bodies that release spores, allowing the pathogen to disperse effectively across woodland and orchard environments.
Host plants typically include coniferous species, although deciduous trees may be affected if their natural defense mechanisms are impaired by drought, insect damage, or frost. The fungus penetrates the tree through wounds or broken branches, establishing a mycelial network that gradually consumes the internal wood structure.
Clinical signs of infection include the emergence of fungal fruiting bodies on the trunk or base, discoloration of the wood, and a decrease in wood density. As the rot progresses, the tree may exhibit symptoms of wilting, premature foliage drop, and general decline. In advanced stages, internal decay can lead to complete failure of the trunk or root system, resulting in tree collapse.
Prevention is the most effective way to manage the disease. It is critical to perform regular sanitation pruning, removing dead wood where the fungus could harbor, and protecting trees from mechanical injuries during maintenance. Improving site drainage and soil health can also mitigate the conditions that favor fungal growth. In severe cases, the application of appropriate fungicide treatments to wounds is recommended.
