The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Calocybe civilis, which acts as a serious soil-borne pathogen. It is a basidiomycete that thrives in diverse environments, causing significant physiological stress to the host plants by attacking the root system and the lower stem tissues.
This pathogen has a wide host range, frequently affecting vegetable crops, legumes, and cereals. Young seedlings are particularly susceptible, often suffering from "damping-off," which can lead to catastrophic losses in plant population density during the initial establishment of the crop in the field.
Symptoms typically include water-soaked lesions on the roots that eventually turn dark brown or black. As the infection progresses, the root cortex decays, severely inhibiting the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients. Consequently, affected plants exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and eventually, permanent wilting.
Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the disease development. High soil moisture, cool temperatures, and poorly drained soils provide an ideal habitat for Calocybe civilis. The fungus survives in crop debris and soil, making it a persistent threat in fields where monoculture practices are employed without appropriate sanitation.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include using certified, fungicide-treated seeds, maintaining optimal soil pH, and ensuring balanced nitrogen fertilization to avoid excessive vegetative growth that may increase susceptibility.
