Description
It is important to clarify that Calocybe gambosa, commonly known as St. George's mushroom, is not a plant disease or a pathogen. It is a saprotrophic fungus that lives in the soil and feeds exclusively on decomposing organic matter, playing a beneficial role in nutrient cycling.
The fungus does not infect crops or cause symptoms like wilting, necrosis, or structural damage to plant tissues. It is often misidentified as a threat due to its tendency to appear in circles on lawns, which is a natural vegetative growth pattern rather than a sign of pathological activity.
Symptoms of its presence include the emergence of white fruiting bodies in late spring. While the area of the fungal colony might show localized changes in grass growth due to nitrogen release from the degradation of organic matter, this does not represent a hazard to garden crops or ornamental plants.
There is no economic damage associated with this fungus. In fact, by contributing to the breakdown of organic debris, it aids in soil fertility. Therefore, there is no need for protective measures, fungicides, or any other control methods typical for plant diseases.
Management is primarily aesthetic rather than agronomic. To prevent the visibility of the fruiting bodies on manicured lawns, practitioners should focus on regular aeration and scarification, which disrupt the fungal habitat. There is no biological basis for treating this fungus as a plant enemy.
