Calonectria is a genus of pathogenic fungi, formerly associated with the anamorph genus Cylindrocladium, which causes severe diseases in a wide variety of plants. This fungus is a soil-borne pathogen known for its ability to survive in plant debris and soil for long periods, making it a persistent threat in agricultural and horticultural environments.

The host range of Calonectria is extensive, affecting eucalyptus, azaleas, ornamental trees, and various nursery-grown plants. It is particularly devastating in greenhouse production, where high density and environmental uniformity create optimal conditions for rapid disease cycles that can destroy entire batches of seedlings.

Key symptoms include dark leaf spots, stem cankers, and severe root rot. Infected plants often show signs of wilt and chlorosis before complete collapse. Under humid conditions, a characteristic white to yellow sporulating layer may become visible on the stems or the underside of the leaves, indicating the active dispersal phase of the pathogen.

The development and spread of Calonectria are highly dependent on high moisture levels and warm temperatures. Spores are easily disseminated through irrigation water, splashing rain, contaminated soil movement, and the handling of infected nursery stock. Because the spores are sticky and resilient, sanitation is critical to stopping the spread.

Effective management requires an integrated approach starting with strict quarantine procedures and the use of certified pathogen-free plant material. Growers should maintain optimal drainage, avoid over-irrigation, and ensure adequate spacing between plants to reduce humidity. Chemical control involves the application of fungicides such as benzimidazoles or strobilurins, though resistance management is essential when utilizing these products.
