The fungus acts as a necrotrophic pathogen, causing tissue death through the production of specialized enzymes and toxins. It affects young leaves, shoots, and sometimes roots, which can lead to rapid defoliation and tip dieback. In severe infection cases, the entire seedling may succumb, particularly in high-density nursery environments where conditions are favorable for fungal proliferation.

Diagnostic symptoms typically start as small, water-soaked spots on leaves that soon turn reddish-brown or dark brown, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, causing the leaf tissue to necroticize and tear. Cultural practices such as maintaining proper plant spacing, ensuring good drainage, and sanitation are essential. Chemical control, including the application of broad-spectrum fungicides, is often necessary during peak disease periods to maintain healthy seedlings and prevent large-scale outbreaks.
