Description
Calonectria brasiliensis is a devastating fungal pathogen primarily recognized for causing severe leaf blight and stem lesions in various plant species, most notably within the Eucalyptus genus. This fungus belongs to the order Hypocreales and is known for its ability to cause significant economic losses in forest nurseries and commercial plantations worldwide.
The host range of this pathogen is primarily focused on tropical and subtropical woody plants. In susceptible species, the fungus attacks the leaf tissues and young stems, significantly reducing the photosynthetic capacity of the host and, in severe cases, leading to the total defoliation and death of the plant if the infection reaches the vascular system.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of small, water-soaked spots on leaves, which rapidly expand into dark brown or necrotic lesions. Often, a distinct yellow halo surrounds these spots. Under conditions of high humidity, white or yellowish masses of fungal conidia become visible on the underside of the leaves, which act as the primary source of secondary inoculum.
The development and spread of Calonectria brasiliensis are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. Rain splash is the main mechanism for local dispersal, while human activity, such as transporting contaminated equipment or infected nursery stock, contributes to the long-distance spread of the disease.
Effective management requires an integrated approach starting with the use of pathogen-free seedlings. Cultural practices, such as maintaining proper spacing to improve air circulation and ensuring good drainage in nurseries, are crucial to minimize humidity levels. Fungicides, including copper-based formulations and systemic triazoles, can be effective if applied early in the infection cycle to prevent the establishment of the disease.
