Pathogen and disease type. Calonectria candelabra is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota division. It is recognized as a significant causative agent of leaf spots, blights, and stem cankers in various plant species. As a hemibiotrophic pathogen, it initially colonizes host tissues to obtain nutrients before killing them, leading to the necrotic symptoms characteristic of the disease.

Host range. The primary hosts for this fungus are species within the Eucalyptus genus. It poses a significant threat to commercial forestry plantations and tree nurseries. While primarily associated with eucalyptus, the pathogen's broad host range allows it to adapt to various woody plants, especially in regions with tropical or subtropical climatic conditions.

Symptoms and signs. Infection typically starts as small, circular, or irregular brown lesions on leaves, which rapidly expand and coalesce. As the disease progresses, petioles and young shoots develop lesions, leading to dieback. Under high humidity, researchers often observe white or yellow masses of conidia on the surface of infected tissues, indicating active sporulation.

Environmental conditions. The development and dispersal of Calonectria candelabra are heavily influenced by environmental factors, specifically high temperature and rainfall. Frequent irrigation and poorly ventilated greenhouse conditions in nurseries act as catalysts for the disease. Spores are primarily dispersed through splashing water, wind-driven rain, and contaminated nursery equipment.

Damage and control measures. This disease can cause severe economic losses in forestry by reducing tree growth, causing high mortality rates in young seedlings, and weakening mature trees. Management strategies include:

  • using disease-resistant eucalyptus clones;
  • maintaining low humidity through proper spacing and ventilation;
  • strictly sanitizing nursery tools and removing debris;
  • applying site-specific fungicide programs to inhibit spore germination.
