It is a formidable pathogen in nurseries and greenhouse environments where environmental conditions can be precisely controlled by the fungus.

Affected crops. The host range of Calonectria hurae includes various broad-leaved trees and ornamental species. It is particularly notorious for its impact on woody plants and tropical foliage crops. Both seedlings and mature plants are susceptible, with younger tissue often exhibiting higher vulnerability due to its softer cell structure, allowing the fungus to penetrate more rapidly.

Symptoms and indicators. The primary visual evidence includes the development of irregular, necrotic spots on leaves, often characterized by a darker margin. Under conditions of high humidity, white or yellowish mycelial growth may appear on the necrotic lesions. In severe cases, the infection spreads to the stems, causing lesions that girdle the branch, leading to sudden wilting and dieback of the distal portions of the plant.

Conditions for development and severity. High relative humidity, persistent leaf wetness, and moderate to warm temperatures are the critical factors driving the development of Calonectria hurae. The disease is particularly severe in poor ventilation scenarios where the spore load accumulates rapidly. The overall severity is high, as the pathogen can cause rapid defoliation and root decay, significantly reducing the commercial value of ornamental plants.
