Description
Calonectria pteridis is a destructive fungal pathogen responsible for leaf spot and blight diseases in a variety of fern species and other ornamentals. This fungus is taxonomically classified as an ascomycete and is known for its ability to produce abundant conidia, which act as the primary inoculums for rapid spread within confined environments like nurseries and greenhouses.
The primary host range of this pathogen prominently includes various cultivars of Nephrolepis (Boston ferns), but it is documented to affect other plant genera as well. Due to its polyphagous nature, it represents a significant economic challenge for growers, often leading to total loss of market value for infected nursery stock.
Symptoms typically manifest as small, water-soaked spots on foliage, which eventually darken and necroticize into brown or black irregular patches. In humid environments, infected areas may exhibit a fine, whitish to tan fungal growth on the underside of the leaves or along the petioles, leading to premature leaf drop and systemic weakening of the plant.
Epidemiological development is heavily favored by warm, humid conditions with temperatures generally ranging between 20°C and 28°C. The pathogen persists in soil, infected debris, and contaminated irrigation water. Because conidia are easily dispersed by water splash, poor greenhouse sanitation and inconsistent irrigation practices are the most frequent drivers of disease outbreaks.
Integrated pest management strategies are essential to mitigate the impact of this pathogen:
- Maintain strict hygiene, including the removal and destruction of all symptomatic plant material.
- Improve air circulation to reduce leaf wetness duration.
- Avoid overhead irrigation to prevent the mechanical spread of spores via water splash.
- Apply preventative fungicide programs using effective chemistry groups.
- Disinfect all benches, pots, and tools between production cycles to prevent carry-over infection.
