Calonectria variabilis is a pathogenic fungus known for causing significant foliage and stem diseases in a variety of woody plants. As an ascomycete pathogen, it is particularly recognized in the forestry industry for its ability to cause severe damage in nurseries and plantations in tropical and subtropical regions.

The primary hosts of this fungus include various Eucalyptus species, which are highly susceptible to infection during their juvenile growth stages. Beyond eucalypts, the pathogen can also infect various ornamental trees and shrubs, affecting their overall health, photosynthetic capacity, and physiological stability.

Typical symptoms of Calonectria variabilis infection include the development of irregularly shaped necrotic spots on the leaves, leading to chlorosis and subsequent defoliation. On stems and seedlings, the fungus creates distinct cankers that can girdle the plant, restricting nutrient transport and causing the plant to wilt or die. In high humidity, white to yellowish masses of conidia are often visible on the lesions.

The development and spread of Calonectria variabilis are heavily influenced by environmental factors. High relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 28 °C create the ideal conditions for spore germination and colonization of host tissues. The pathogen typically disperses via water splash, contaminated tools, or air currents within greenhouse environments.
