Calophoma is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Pleosporales, which includes several important plant pathogens previously classified under the genus Phoma. These fungi cause localized necrosis and systemic damage in a wide range of host plants, significantly impacting agricultural productivity worldwide.

This pathogen primarily infects crops such as cereals, oilseeds (particularly rapeseed), and various vegetables. It colonizes different plant parts, including roots, stems, leaves, and fruits, depending on the specific host and the environmental conditions present during the growing season.

Symptoms of Calophoma infection typically manifest as necrotic lesions, which can appear as dark, sunken spots on leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, small, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop within the necrotic tissue. Severe infections often lead to stem girdling, wilting, and premature senescence of the plant, significantly reducing its vitality.

The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental factors, particularly moisture and temperature. Spores are primarily disseminated by rain splash, wind, and movement through the canopy. High humidity and mild temperatures create optimal conditions for the germination of conidia, allowing the fungus to infect susceptible tissue through natural openings or mechanical wounds.

Managing Calophoma requires an integrated approach to reduce the inoculum load in the field. Effective control strategies include:
