Caloplaca maritima is a species of crustose lichen, often found in maritime environments, which can colonize the bark of various woody plants. While it is not a pathogenic disease agent in the sense of parasitic fungi, its presence on agricultural crops is often an indicator of stagnant microclimate conditions and can physically impact tree health if left unmanaged.
The organism functions as a symbiotic association between a fungus and algae. It does not penetrate the host tissues to extract nutrients, but rather uses the bark as a substrate for attachment. However, the accumulation of dense lichen mats on the bark inhibits gaseous exchange and provides a protected environment for overwintering pests, such as aphids and mites, as well as fungal spores.
Fruit trees with mature, rough, or fissured bark are the primary hosts for Caloplaca maritima. Apple, pear, and plum trees situated in areas with high ambient humidity or proximity to coastal zones are particularly susceptible to colonization, as these conditions favor the growth and reproduction of crustose lichen species.
Symptoms appear as distinct, bright orange or yellow patches covering the trunk and scaffold branches. These patches are firmly attached to the substrate. Over several seasons, the colonization can expand significantly, causing the bark to lose its natural elasticity and potentially harboring moisture that can lead to underlying bark decay.

Furthermore, maintaining the overall health of the orchard through proper irrigation and nutrient management helps trees develop smoother, more resistant bark, which is less likely to support extensive lichen colonies.
