Caloscypha, specifically the species Caloscypha fulgens, is a pathogenic fungus that causes significant damage to conifer seeds and young seedlings. In forestry and nursery management, it is recognized as a serious threat to the establishment of healthy young forest stands.
The fungus primarily attacks seeds of various conifers, most notably spruce, fir, and pine. It thrives in nursery environments where large quantities of seeds are sown in confined spaces, making the control of this pathogen essential for successful reforestation efforts.
Symptoms of the infection include the development of a distinct, bright yellow-to-orange mycelial mat covering the seeds and the surrounding soil surface. This mycelium effectively consumes the seed endosperm, leading to seed rot before germination, or resulting in the rapid death of seedlings shortly after they emerge.
The development of this disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture and relatively cool temperatures. The fungus can persist in the soil for extended periods, utilizing organic debris as a substrate, which allows it to remain a recurring problem in affected nurseries.
