Calosphaeriaceae is a family of ascomycetous fungi known to cause serious wood-decay and necrosis diseases in a wide range of woody plants. These pathogens primarily target the vascular system and the cortex, leading to structural impairment and eventual tissue death in infected stems and branches.
The host range for these fungi is extensive, often impacting orchards, vineyards, and various ornamental trees. Species such as Prunus and Vitis are particularly susceptible, frequently suffering from branch dieback and reduced yield when exposed to these pathogens in favorable environments.
Symptoms typically include sunken necrotic lesions on the bark, internal wood discoloration, and sudden wilting of leaves during the growing season. As the disease progresses, the tree may show signs of chronic stress, characterized by stunted growth and the emergence of small, eruptive fruiting bodies on the surface of the bark.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity and moderate temperatures facilitate the release and germination of fungal spores. Infections are most commonly initiated through physical wounds, such as pruning cuts or winter frost damage, which provide an entry point for the mycelium to establish itself within the host.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation. These include strictly removing and destroying symptomatic plant material, sanitizing pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination, and applying protective fungicides to vulnerable wounds. Maintaining tree vigor through balanced fertilization and correct irrigation also plays a significant role in reducing susceptibility.
