The order Calosphaeriales comprises a group of ascomycetous fungi known for causing various wood-decaying and necrosis-inducing diseases in plants. These pathogens are typically opportunistic, targeting trees that have already been weakened by environmental stress, poor nutrition, or physical damage. They play a significant role in the degradation of woody tissues, often leading to decline and reduced crop yields.
A wide range of tree species can serve as hosts for these fungi, including popular orchard crops like apple, pear, and various hardwood forest species. The fungi invade the cambium and inner bark tissues, systematically disrupting the tree's vascular system. Over time, this restriction of nutrient and water flow causes individual branches to wilt and die back.
Symptoms usually manifest as localized bark lesions or cankers that may appear sunken or cracked. As the infection progresses, the inner wood beneath these lesions often shows signs of discoloration and decay. During moist weather conditions, the fungi produce small, dark-colored fruiting bodies that erupt through the bark surface, indicating the active reproductive stage of the pathogen.
The development of these infections is highly dependent on humidity and the presence of entry points such as pruning wounds, broken branches, or frost cracks. Once established, the fungi can survive for extended periods in infected woody debris, creating a persistent inoculum source in the environment. Spores are primarily dispersed by splashing rain and wind currents to nearby susceptible hosts.
