Calostilbe is a genus of ascomycete fungi responsible for causing specific necrotic diseases in various woody plants. Within the field of plant pathology, infections caused by this fungus are recognized for their ability to compromise the structural and vascular integrity of stems and branches, leading to significant physiological stress in the host plant.
As an opportunistic pathogen, the fungus primarily acts as a necrotic agent, invading the host through physical wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks in the bark. Once established, the fungus colonizes the cambium layer, effectively disrupting the flow of water and nutrients, which results in localized tissue death and potential systemic failure of the affected branch or stem.
The host range of Calostilbe primarily includes hardwood trees and specific ornamental shrubs, particularly in regions with high humidity. Young saplings in nursery environments are especially susceptible, as their bark is thin and more easily penetrated. If left unchecked, the fungus can cause significant economic losses in both timber production and ornamental nursery stock.
Symptoms often manifest as distinct, sunken, or discolored lesions on the bark, which may eventually crack and form open cankers. In advanced stages, the foliage above the infection site may wilt, turn yellow, and drop prematurely. Under moist conditions, one may observe the formation of small, brightly colored fungal fruiting bodies on the surface of the lesions, confirming the presence of the pathogen.
Management and prevention are essential because curative treatments for deep-seated bark infections are limited. Control strategies include:
- Sanitary pruning to remove and destroy infected plant tissues.
- Sterilization of pruning equipment after each use to prevent cross-contamination.
- Promoting plant vigor through balanced fertilization and adequate water management.
- Applying fungicidal protectants to fresh pruning wounds in high-risk areas.
