Description
The genus Calvatia, commonly known as giant puffballs, comprises basidiomycete fungi. While generally considered beneficial decomposers, in agricultural settings, their massive mycelial growth can sometimes act as a nuisance, affecting soil structure and competing with the rhizosphere of young crops.
The pathogen/fungal agent is a soil-dwelling saprotroph. It thrives by decomposing complex organic matter. Its biological cycle is heavily dependent on soil moisture and the presence of abundant plant residues, which serve as a primary nutrient source for the expanding mycelium.
Crops most susceptible to the environmental presence of Calvatia are those grown in high-organic soils, such as nursery seedlings or greenhouse vegetables. While they do not typically infect tissues directly, the density of the mycelial mat can inhibit root elongation and nutrient uptake.
Diagnostic signs include the sudden appearance of spherical fruiting bodies and a white, cotton-like mycelium visible in the topsoil. Plants affected may show signs of yellowing (chlorosis) and stunted height, resulting from the fungal network outcompeting the roots for water.
Management strategies focus on cultural control: improving soil drainage, reducing excessive organic mulch in vulnerable areas, and ensuring proper ventilation in greenhouses. Chemical control using standard soil fungicides is rarely necessary unless infestations are severe, in which case systemic triazoles are generally effective.
