In agricultural science, this organism is categorized as a saprotroph, which means it thrives on decaying organic matter rather than acting as a plant pathogen. Its presence in fields is typically a marker of high organic content in the soil.

The fungus develops from an extensive underground mycelial network that degrades complex organic substances. Its reproductive stage produces large, globose to obovoid fruiting bodies. Unlike parasitic diseases that require a host, Calvatia cyathiformis completes its life cycle independently of living crop tissues, playing a role in natural soil nutrient cycling.
