Calycidium is a fungal plant disease associated with specific lichenized fungi that colonize the bark of woody plants. While often regarded as an epiphytic occurrence, in intensive horticulture and forestry, it can act as a pathogen that interferes with the host's physiological activities, causing long-term stress and decline in plant vigor.

The causal agent is an ascomycete fungus. It is a specialized pathogen that thrives on the bark surface of trees and shrubs. The disease primarily affects woody species, including fruit trees and landscape plants, where it disrupts the integrity of the bark layer and creates favorable conditions for the settlement of other opportunistic pests.

Symptoms of the infection include the presence of characteristic cup-shaped fruit bodies on the surface of branches and stems. As the fungus progresses, the bark in the affected area may become discolored, brittle, and cracked. This leads to the destruction of the periderm and subsequent exposure of the underlying tissues to adverse environmental factors.

The development and spread of Calycidium are heavily influenced by high ambient humidity and poor ventilation within the canopy. The fungal spores are typically dispersed by rain splash and air currents, allowing the infection to spread rapidly through densely planted orchards or nurseries where humidity levels remain constantly high.

The harmfulness of the disease manifests in stunted tree growth, decreased fruit quality, and increased susceptibility to winter damage. Prevention and management strategies include regular sanitary pruning to improve air circulation, proper fertilization to maintain tree health, and the application of copper-based fungicides when infection levels are high enough to cause localized necrosis.
