Calycina disease

The term Calycina disease refers to infections caused by fungi of the Calycina genus. These pathogens are classified as ascomycetes and are known for causing localized tissue necrosis in various plant species. The infection cycle usually begins when spores land on susceptible plant tissues, allowing the fungus to penetrate the outer layers and establish a parasitic relationship with the host.

This pathogen affects a wide range of host plants, including various horticultural and ornamental crops. It is particularly damaging to perennial plants where the fungus can persist on stems or branches over several seasons. Host plants show varied levels of susceptibility depending on their age, general health status, and prevailing environmental conditions during the growing season.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic lesions that progressively deepen and darken over time. These spots often develop in clusters, leading to the cracking of the bark or stem epidermis, which significantly compromises the structural integrity of the plant. Under favorable conditions, the formation of small, saucer-shaped fruiting bodies, known as apothecia, indicates a mature stage of the fungal infection.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of the disease. High humidity, mild temperatures, and frequent rainfall create an ideal microclimate for the discharge and germination of spores. Furthermore, poor ventilation within plant canopies or orchards exacerbates the spread, as moisture remains on the foliage for extended periods, facilitating rapid colonization by the fungus.

Effective management and protection require a proactive approach focused on sanitation and chemical intervention. Recommended strategies include:

• pruning and disposing of infected plant material to reduce inoculum;
• improving air circulation through proper spacing and canopy management;
• applying appropriate fungicides during high-risk weather conditions;
• maintaining plant vigor through balanced nutrition and proper watering practices.
