Calyptella capula is a species of basidiomycete fungus in the Marasmiaceae family, often classified as a saprotroph. However, under certain environmental conditions, it can exhibit pathogenic properties by attacking weakened or decaying parts of herbaceous plants. In an agronomic context, this micromycete is of interest as it contributes to the degradation of plant tissues in high-humidity environments.
The causal agent is the fungus Calyptella capula. It affects a wide range of crops, including vegetables, ornamentals, and wild herbaceous plants. The fungus is most frequently found on plant residues with hollow stems (such as umbellifers or nettles), where it creates favorable conditions for secondary infection. The main type of disease is the development of surface rot or necrosis in damaged tissue areas.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of distinct bell-shaped or cup-shaped fruiting bodies of the fungus, which are white, cream, or yellowish, appearing on stems and leaves. Plant tissues at the site of mycelium localization become soft, watery, and eventually develop a brownish hue. Severe infestation leads to premature wilting and necrosis of the affected stem sections.
Development of Calyptella capula is promoted by high atmospheric humidity, frequent precipitation, and moderate temperatures (between +15°C and +22°C). The fungus spreads actively via spores through air and water in dense plantings, where poor aeration prevents the rapid drying of plant surfaces. Plant debris remaining in the soil or on the surface serves as the primary reservoir for the infection.
The harmfulness of this fungus lies in weakening the plant's natural defenses and facilitating the entry of more dangerous pathogens. Management and prevention strategies include:

- Maintaining optimal planting density to improve air circulation.
- Application of broad-spectrum fungicides as a preventive measure upon detecting early symptoms.
