As an ascomycete pathogen, it primarily targets the host tissue, leading to localized necrosis and long-term damage to the plant structure. The host range of this disease primarily includes woody plants, shrubs, and certain perennial flora. The pathogen typically enters the host through physical wounds, cracks in the bark, or natural pores, making the plant particularly vulnerable after severe weather events or improper pruning practices that leave exposed areas of tissue.

The primary clinical signs of infection include discolored, sunken lesions on the bark or stems, often accompanied by the emergence of small, dark fruiting bodies. As the fungal colony expands, it disrupts the vascular system of the plant, resulting in foliage wilt, branch dieback, and in severe cases, the eventual death of the affected plant section.

Disease progression is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are ideal for the production and spread of fungal spores. The dissemination of the pathogen is largely driven by wind and splashing water, allowing the fungus to move from infected debris or bark onto healthy foliage and stems.

Management and prevention require an integrated approach. Essential practices include the removal and destruction of infected plant material to minimize spore load, improving air circulation through proper pruning, and ensuring the plants are kept in a vigorous condition to help them resist infection. Chemical intervention using appropriate fungicides can be applied as a preventive measure in high-risk environments.
