Camarophyllopsis hymenocephala is a species of fungus in the family Hygrophoraceae that can affect soil health and turf quality in domestic and commercial lawns. While primarily a decomposer, its presence within the root zone of lawn grasses can lead to competitive stress for turf plants, resulting in visible deterioration of the green cover.
Biologically, the fungus thrives in nutrient-rich but poorly aerated soils. It forms a network of mycelium that can physically block water and nutrient absorption by grass roots. When the infestation becomes severe, it contributes to the weakening of the turf, making it susceptible to secondary pathogens and environmental stressors like drought or frost.
The primary symptom of infection is the appearance of small, cone-shaped mushrooms following periods of sustained wet weather. Simultaneously, patches of the lawn may begin to yellow, wilt, and die off. This creates an uneven, unsightly appearance, often with the grass becoming easily detached from the soil due to root rot caused by the fungus.
