It belongs to the group of pyrenomycetes and is known for its ability to break down the complex organic structures of wood. While it often functions as a saprotroph, it can become parasitic when tree health is compromised, leading to significant damage in forest ecosystems.
The fungus typically infects trees from the Fagaceae family, including various species of beech and birch. It colonizes the wood through open wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks, where the protective bark layer is absent.
