This fungus typically affects a variety of broad-leaved trees and shrubs. It is commonly observed in tropical and subtropical regions, colonizing the stems and branches of host plants. The presence of the fungus is often an indicator of underlying physiological stress within the tree.

Symptoms of the infection involve the development of characteristic fungal structures called stromata. These appear as small, dark, and often circular or oval bumps on the bark.
