Campanella (Latin: Campanella) refers to a group of fungal pathogens known to cause specific diseases in various plant species. These fungi, typically classified within the Basidiomycota phylum, primarily target woody tissues, though their impact can extend to various parts of the plant, including stems and foliage.

The primary clinical sign of the infection is the development of small, bell-shaped fruiting bodies on the surface of bark or necrotic tissues. Other visible indicators include generalized chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), stunted shoot development, and the formation of depressed cankers on the stems that interfere with the plant's structural integrity.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high relative humidity and moderate ambient temperatures. These conditions create an ideal microclimate for spore germination and colonization. Transmission occurs via wind-blown spores, splashing raindrops, or contaminated pruning tools that spread the mycelium between healthy and affected specimens.

The economic impact of Campanella is significant, particularly in orchards and ornamental nurseries. By disrupting the vascular system of the host, the fungus reduces the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients, leading to chronic stress, loss of vigor, and, in severe cases, the eventual death of the entire plant structure.

This includes ensuring proper plant spacing to facilitate airflow, prompt removal and destruction of infected materials, and the strict sanitization of pruning shears. Applying systemic fungicides can help suppress the fungal growth during periods of high vulnerability, effectively mitigating the spread of the disease.
