Copper Campanella (Campanella aeruginea) is a basidiomycete fungus identified as a plant pathogen that primarily affects woody tissues and stems. Although it often acts as a saprotroph in nature, in managed environments, it can transition into a parasitic mode, attacking weakened plants, particularly in orchards or ornamental plantations where high humidity persists.
The disease is caused by the colonization of the fungus within the vascular system and bark of the host. As a pathogen, Campanella aeruginea targets the cambium layer, leading to tissue degradation. This process of decay compromises the structural integrity of the affected plant and prevents the efficient transport of nutrients and water throughout the organism.
Symptoms of the infection usually include the appearance of metallic-copper or greenish-brown fungal mats on the surface of the bark or branches. As the disease progresses, necrotic patches develop, which may lead to bark cracking, the formation of cankers, and, in severe cases, the dieback of entire branches or the death of the plant if the infection reaches the main trunk.
The development of the fungus is strictly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity (above 80%) and temperatures ranging between 18°C and 24°C. The spread of the disease is facilitated by wind-borne spores, rain splash, and contaminated pruning tools. Poor site ventilation and stagnant water are the primary environmental stressors that encourage the rapid colonization of this pathogen.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is crucial, involving the immediate removal and destruction of infected parts, along with the thorough disinfection of gardening tools to prevent cross-contamination. Additionally, applying copper-based fungicides during the dormant season serves as an effective preventative measure to protect vulnerable plant tissues against potential outbreaks.
Maintaining optimal plant health through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation helps minimize susceptibility to Campanella aeruginea. In commercial forestry and horticulture, monitoring for early signs of the fungus is essential, as the infection is often deep-seated by the time visible fruiting bodies emerge. Strategic pruning to improve airflow is highly recommended to mitigate favorable conditions for the fungus.
