Campylocarpon is a genus of soil-borne fungi known for causing severe root rot and decline in grapevines. This disease is a significant component of the complex of fungal infections that contribute to the failure of vine establishments. The most frequently identified species associated with this syndrome are Campylocarpon fasciculare and Campylocarpon pseudofasciculare.

The pathogen specifically targets the root system and the subterranean stem base. By infecting the vascular tissues of the plant, the fungus disrupts the transport of nutrients and water. This impairment leads to a gradual starvation of the grapevine, often causing it to decline over several years before death occurs.

Symptoms of an infection are often cryptic, appearing as overall poor vigor, stunted growth, and canopy chlorosis. When inspecting the root system, one will typically find dark lesions, necrosis, and a general lack of fine, healthy root hairs. In severe cases, the infected roots become necrotic and brittle, failing to support the plant's nutritional needs.

The spread and development of the disease are highly dependent on soil conditions, particularly moisture levels and temperature. Compacted soils with poor drainage provide an ideal environment for Campylocarpon to thrive and colonize host tissues. The fungus can survive as a saprophyte in soil debris for extended periods, making it a persistent threat to replanted vineyards.

Management of the disease relies heavily on preventative cultural practices rather than curative chemical treatments. Producers should ensure the use of certified, disease-free nursery stock and provide optimal soil drainage to prevent waterlogging. Practicing good hygiene, such as disinfecting pruning equipment and removing infested root debris from the vineyard, is crucial to minimizing the inoculum load in the soil.
