Campylocarpon pseudofasciculare is a soil-borne fungal pathogen recognized as a primary causative agent of black foot disease in grapevines. This fungus belongs to the family of pathogens that severely compromise the health of root systems, leading to reduced vigor and, in severe cases, the death of the entire plant.

The primary host for this disease is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). Both nursery-grown rootstocks and established vineyard vines can be infected. The impact is particularly devastating for younger plants, which may fail to establish effectively due to compromised root nutrient uptake.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as stunted growth, interveinal chlorosis, and reduced leaf size. A definitive sign is found below the soil surface, where the roots exhibit black or dark brown necrotic lesions. These lesions often progress from the fine root hairs into the main structural roots, causing the bark to soften and eventually rot.

The development of the disease is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture, poor drainage, and soil compaction. The pathogen thrives in saturated environments where root stress is already present. It spreads through contaminated soil, irrigation water, and the distribution of infected nursery stock, making it a critical concern for vineyard biosecurity.

Effective management and prevention of this pathogen involve a multi-faceted approach to viticulture:

  • Prioritizing the use of clean, certified, and healthy nursery planting material.
  • Improving vineyard site selection to ensure excellent soil drainage and aeration.
  • Avoiding waterlogging and excessive irrigation, which encourage fungal growth.
  • Regular monitoring of vine health and conducting laboratory diagnostics if symptoms appear.
  • Strict sanitation protocols for pruning tools and machinery to prevent the movement of contaminated soil between blocks.
