The host range is primarily limited to species within the Pinus genus. The disease cycle is closely tied to the longevity of the needles, and the pathogen typically invades younger needles, although symptoms may manifest over subsequent seasons. Host susceptibility is often higher in stressed trees, particularly those suffering from nutrient deficiencies or those growing in suboptimal site conditions.
Key symptoms include the discoloration of needles, which turn yellow and then reddish-brown.
