Candelabrochaete is a genus of fungi within the order Hymenochaetales, recognized for its role as a wood-decay pathogen. These fungi are primarily responsible for white rot, a process in which the fungus decomposes lignin and cellulose, leading to the gradual degradation of tree structure.
The disease mechanism involves the infiltration of the mycelium into the wood tissue. Once established, the fungus secretes enzymes that break down the woody cell walls. Over time, this biological activity compromises the structural integrity of the affected host tree.
These fungi typically target deciduous and coniferous trees, especially those that are stressed or have sustained mechanical damage. Areas of exposed wood, such as broken branches or frost cracks, serve as the primary entry points for spores to infect the tree host.
Environmental conditions that favor development include high humidity and stable, moderate temperatures. These factors allow for the prolific spread of spores through the air and via insects, which colonize damp or damaged wood surfaces throughout the forest or orchard.
