The fungus affects a wide variety of horticultural crops, including pome fruits, stone fruits, and various vegetables. It is particularly opportunistic, primarily infecting produce that has already sustained physical damage such as bruises, punctures, or skin micro-cracks during harvesting or packaging processes, which provides an entry point for the yeast to establish itself in the nutrient-rich host tissue.
