The fungus establishes an ectomycorrhizal relationship with its host trees, including species like spruce, pine, and oak. In this partnership, the mycelium forms a sheath around the root tips, increasing the surface area for water and nutrient uptake. Unlike parasitic pathogens, the chanterelle does not invade host cells or cause tissue necrosis.
