Description

Sooty mold, caused by fungi in the Capnodiaceae family, is a common surface-dwelling fungal growth that appears as a dark, powdery coating on leaves and stems. Unlike true pathogenic fungi, sooty mold does not infect the plant tissue itself but grows superficially on the sticky secretions left by insects.

The primary causal agents belong to the order Capnodiales. These fungi feed on 'honeydew', a sugary substance excreted by sap-sucking insects such as aphids, whiteflies, scale insects, and mealybugs. If you notice a dark coating on your plants, it is a clear indicator that a colony of these pests is present nearby.

This condition affects a vast range of plant species, including ornamental trees, shrubs, citrus, and various fruit trees. Plants in environments with poor air circulation and high humidity are particularly vulnerable, as these conditions favor both the insect populations and the subsequent fungal growth.

The symptoms appear as a black, soot-like film that covers the surface of leaves and fruit. While the fungus itself does not draw nutrients from the plant, it acts as a physical barrier. By blocking sunlight and clogging leaf stomata, the mold inhibits photosynthesis, which stunts the plant’s growth and weakens its overall vigor.

Effective control of sooty mold depends on managing the insect population responsible for the honeydew excretion:

  • Control sap-sucking insects using appropriate systemic insecticides or horticultural oils.
  • Prune branches to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration in the canopy.
  • Wash affected leaves with a mild soapy solution to remove the mold manually.
  • Monitor plants regularly to detect pest infestations before the mold can establish itself.
