Capnodium elaeophilum is a fungal disease categorized as sooty mold. This pathogen colonizes the surface of leaves, branches, and fruits, feeding on the honeydew secreted by sap-sucking insects like scale insects, aphids, and mealybugs.

The primary host for this fungus is the olive tree (Olea europaea). The disease is rarely found on other plants, as it depends heavily on the specific pest complex that inhabits olive groves in Mediterranean-like climates.

The characteristic symptom is a dark, soot-like layer covering the foliage. While the fungus does not directly invade the plant tissue, the dark mat prevents photosynthesis, which stunts tree growth, causes leaf drop, and significantly reduces fruit quality.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity, poor orchard ventilation, and excessive canopy density promote the rapid development of the fungus. The presence of insect colonies is the prerequisite for the fungal outbreak, as it provides the essential nutrients for spore germination.

Effective management and protection require an integrated approach focusing on both the fungus and the insects:

  • Eliminate sap-sucking insect populations through targeted insecticides.
  • Perform annual pruning to open the canopy and improve air circulation.
  • Remove heavily infested branches to reduce inoculum sources.
  • Use copper-based fungicides to inhibit fungal growth on surfaces.
