Carcinomycetaceae is a family of basidiomycetous fungi that play a unique role in plant pathology as mycoparasites. Unlike typical plant pathogens that attack crops directly, members of this family primarily target other fungi, particularly those causing rust diseases on various agricultural plants. Their presence in the field is a complex indicator of the ecosystem's interaction between different fungal species.

The pathogens are characterized by a dimorphic life cycle, involving yeast-like stages that allow for rapid colonization of host fungi. From an agronomic perspective, the disease type is categorized as mycoparasitism. While they rarely cause primary tissue damage themselves, their impact on the physiological processes of the primary pathogen can lead to secondary stress in the host crop.

Target crops primarily include wheat, barley, and various grasses that are prone to rust infections. Symptoms are often subtle and manifest as distortions, color changes, or altered growth patterns of existing rust pustules (uredinia). The development of these fungi is heavily influenced by high humidity and moderate temperatures, providing favorable conditions for spore germination and transmission. They are dispersed by wind and water splashes, moving across fields alongside the spores of the primary pathogen. Understanding their distribution requires identifying the underlying primary fungal infection that serves as the food source for these mycoparasites.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

  • intensive monitoring for primary rust pathogens;
  • targeted application of systemic fungicides;
  • crop rotation practices to reduce inoculum build-up;
  • managing plant density to reduce canopy humidity.
By managing the primary rust fungi through integrated pest management (IPM) practices, growers naturally limit the success and prevalence of Carcinomycetaceae in the field.
