Description
Carnation latent virus (CLV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the Carlavirus genus. It is widely distributed in regions where carnations are cultivated commercially. The term "latent" highlights the pathogen's ability to infect plants and accumulate to high concentrations within the host tissues without causing distinct, easily identifiable morphological symptoms.
The primary host of this virus is Dianthus caryophyllus (carnation). The virus typically infects the vascular system and spreads systemically throughout the plant. While carnations are the main target, the virus can persist in various members of the Caryophyllaceae family, which serves as a reservoir for the infection in both greenhouse and nursery settings.
Symptoms are rarely pronounced in single-virus infections, making field diagnosis extremely difficult. Infected plants may appear entirely healthy to the naked eye. However, in cases of mixed infections—where the plant is already carrying other viruses like Carnation mottle virus or Carnation ringspot virus—the combined stress can lead to significant stunting, reduced flower quality, and decreased vase life of the cut flowers.
Transmission occurs primarily through mechanical means. Farm tools, such as pruning knives or scissors used for cutting flowers, act as vectors if they come into contact with the sap of infected plants. Additionally, several species of aphids can transmit the virus in a non-persistent manner. The use of propagation material taken from asymptomatic but infected mother plants is the primary cause of long-distance spread.
Management of Carnation latent virus relies entirely on rigorous sanitation and prevention protocols. Since there is no cure, growers should source virus-indexed, tissue-cultured plantlets. It is critical to sanitize all tools with appropriate disinfectants (such as 70% alcohol or bleach solutions) between plants. Integrating a regular pest management program to control aphid populations is essential to reduce the risk of secondary spread within the greenhouse.
